Three drivers have been hit with grid penalties for the 2026 United States Grand Prix after exceeding seasonal power-unit component allowances, with Gabriel Bortoleto set for a 20-place drop, Franco Colapinto 10 places and Arvid Lindblad five. Source Source Source

What happened
The decisions concern power-unit component allocations, with each of the three drivers taking a penalty after a component was used beyond its permitted seasonal limit. Source Source Source
Audi fitted Bortoleto’s car with a fourth energy store and a fourth control electronics unit, resulting in the 20-place drop. Source Source Source
That sanction is made up of two separate 10-place penalties, because both components were taken beyond the three-unit limit. Source Source
Bortoleto also received a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, exhaust and ancillary components, all of which remained within their respective permitted limits. Source
Colapinto’s 10-place penalty follows Alpine’s installation of a fourth control electronics unit for the season. Source Source Source Source
Lindblad has a five-place drop after Racing Bulls fitted a sixth internal combustion engine, exceeding the permitted allocation of four. Source Source Source
The five-place sanction is Lindblad’s second breach of the internal-combustion-engine limit. Source
Several other drivers, including Kimi Antonelli, took new ancillary components that remain within the seasonal allowance of six. Source
The FIA also published official stewards’ documents detailing the infringements for the three drivers on 23 October. Source
Why it matters
The three rulings create an immediate complication for the Austin starting order, with penalties ranging from five places to Bortoleto’s 20-place sanction. Source Source Source
Bortoleto’s drop is the largest of the confirmed penalties and stems from breaches involving two separate power-unit elements. Source Source
Colapinto’s case is confined to the control electronics unit, while Lindblad’s penalty relates to the internal combustion engine allocation. Source Source Source
Twelve of the 22 drivers on the grid have now exceeded at least one power-unit component allowance during the 2026 season, placing the three Austin penalties within a wider season-long pattern. Source
The permitted ancillary-component changes recorded for other drivers underline that not every new power-unit-related installation has produced a grid sanction. Source
What’s next
The penalties will be applied after qualifying for the United States Grand Prix on 24 October. Source
Qualifying will therefore establish the order from which the respective five-, 10- and 20-place drops are applied. Source Source
The final starting arrangement will need to account for all three confirmed sanctions once qualifying has concluded. Source Source Source
