Audi defers next major F1 power-unit changes until 2027
Audi will make no further major power-unit developments this season as it balances cost-cap spending and continues smaller chassis and systems work.
Lead
Audi will not introduce another major power-unit development during the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with racing director Allan McNish confirming that the next significant changes are planned for 2027. Source Source
The decision leaves Audi pursuing incremental chassis and systems progress through the second half of its first Formula 1 campaign while holding back larger power-unit hardware work. Source Source Source
What happened
Audi’s most recent power-unit change arrived at the Barcelona Grand Prix, where it introduced a modest adaptation aimed primarily at improving driveability. Source Source
That update was permitted under the ADUO provisions available to less competitive power units. Source Source
McNish made clear that there will be no comparable major step before the end of this season, saying: "It'll be next year." Source Source
He added: "And then I would say the bigger parts are for 2027. So we will not see anything big on the power unit until then." Source Source
The longer timetable reflects the scale of the intended 2027 work, which McNish said involves substantial hardware changes that cannot be introduced quickly. Source Source
Audi is therefore continuing with smaller developments to its chassis and systems in 2026 rather than bringing forward major power-unit hardware. Source Source
Why it matters
The call is rooted in the need to operate within Formula 1’s cost cap while dividing spending between chassis and power-unit programmes over more than one season. Source Source
McNish has characterised that balance as a managed multi-season plan, rather than a strategy of concentrating all available resources in a single year. Source Source
For Audi, which entered Formula 1 in 2026 and runs the R26 chassis with its own power unit, the approach defines the development horizon for the rest of its debut campaign. Source Source Source
The Barcelona adaptation has coincided with a stronger run of results, as Audi has scored points in each of the latest three Grands Prix. Source Source
Gabriel Bortoleto finished eighth at both the British and Belgian Grands Prix, having risen from 11th on the grid at Silverstone, while Nico Hülkenberg took ninth in Hungary after starting 10th. Source Source Source
Those results have moved Audi ahead of Williams into eighth in the constructors’ championship, where it has 12 points. Source Source Source
The absence of a further major power-unit step means the team’s immediate progress will depend on extracting value from its existing package and from the smaller changes it has retained in its 2026 plan. Source Source
What's next
Formula 1 resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on 23 August, four weeks after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Source
Audi will return to competition with the same broad power-unit development timetable in place, while its next significant engine hardware changes remain targeted for 2027. Source Source
Notes
Audi’s position applies to further major power-unit developments in 2026, rather than to every form of car development. Source Source
The team has said it will continue smaller chassis and systems improvements through the rest of the season. Source Source
The reporting does not identify the specific hardware components that Audi intends to introduce in 2027. Source Source
