How to start a sports podcast
To start a sports podcast, define a narrow audience and a repeatable show promise, choose a format you can sustain, record a short pilot, publish through a podcast host with an RSS feed, and give each episode one clear question. Strong research and consistent audio matter more than expensive equipment.
- Choose the audience, sport and point of view.
- Define the recurring format and realistic schedule.
- Plan the first five episode questions.
- Record and review a private pilot.
- Create the show name, description and cover art.
- Select a host and prepare the RSS feed.
- Publish a trailer and at least one complete episode.
- Distribute clips and improve from listener behaviour.
Choose a sports podcast idea that can last
“We talk about football” is too broad. A durable show makes a specific promise to a recognisable listener. Define what you cover, what you do differently and why the listener should return.
Podcast positioning formula
For: [specific supporter or creator]
Every: [day / week / match cycle]
We answer: [recurring type of question]
Using: [reporting, data, access or distinctive perspective]
In: [length and format]
Test the idea by writing ten plausible episode titles. If the titles quickly become repetitive, narrow or redesign the promise before buying equipment.
Pick the right podcast format
- Solo analysis: controlled and efficient, but demanding on delivery;
- Co-hosted discussion: natural chemistry, with more scheduling risk;
- Interview: access-led, but quality depends on preparation and guests;
- Match review: timely and repeatable, with a short relevance window;
- Narrative documentary: distinctive and evergreen, but research-heavy; and
- Hybrid: useful once recurring segments are clearly defined.
Start with the simplest format that fulfils the promise. A reliable 25-minute weekly show is stronger than an ambitious schedule you abandon.
A practical starter recording setup
Record in the quietest, softest room available. Position the microphone consistently, use headphones to prevent echo, and capture each remote speaker on a separate track when the software allows it.
- a dependable USB or XLR microphone appropriate to your room;
- closed-back headphones;
- a stand or arm that keeps the microphone stable;
- recording software with separate tracks and backups; and
- a quiet recording space with limited hard-surface reflections.
Run a complete pilot through recording, editing and export before upgrading. The test will show whether the real constraint is the room, technique, workflow or equipment.
Structure each sports podcast episode
- Cold open: the strongest question or moment.
- Promise: what the listener will understand by the end.
- Context: only the facts needed to follow the discussion.
- Main sections: two to four evidence-led chapters.
- Counterpoint: the strongest reasonable alternative view.
- Conclusion: what is known, uncertain and next.
- Call to action: one relevant next step.
Write for listening rather than reading. Use shorter sentences, explain numbers, identify speakers, and signpost when the topic changes.
Host and distribute the podcast
A podcast host stores the media and creates the RSS feed used by listening directories. Apple explains that feed validation checks technical requirements, required tags, artwork and episode media; it does not guarantee editorial approval. Review Apple's RSS validation guidance.
Spotify notes that a feed contains titles, descriptions, artwork and episode media links, and that shows hosted elsewhere still need to be submitted or claimed. See Spotify's RSS feed guidance.
Before launch, check the show title, author, description, category, language, explicit-content setting, square artwork, episode file, website and contact details in the feed.
Grow the show without becoming a clip factory
- title each episode around a recognisable question or outcome;
- publish show notes with sources, names and useful links;
- cut clips that stand alone rather than withholding the answer;
- invite guests with genuine subject knowledge or access;
- appear on complementary shows and exchange qualified audiences;
- ask listeners one specific question and use replies in planning; and
- build an email or web destination you control.
Track episode completion, returning listeners, follows, source-link clicks and replies. Downloads alone do not show whether the right people listened or whether they returned.
Copyright, music and sponsorship
Do not assume broadcast commentary, match audio, music or clips are available because they are easy to capture. Use work you created, properly licensed material, or material your particular use is legally permitted to include. The UK Government's copyright exceptions guidance explains that fair dealing is context-specific and can require sufficient acknowledgement.
Disclose sponsorships and commercial relationships clearly in the audio and supporting page where required. Keep a written record of permissions, licences, sponsor terms and corrections.
Sports podcast launch checklist
Before you press publish
□ The audience and show promise fit in one sentence.
□ Five episode questions are planned.
□ A pilot has been recorded and reviewed.
□ The show name, description and artwork are legible on mobile.
□ The RSS feed validates and contact details are correct.
□ Sources, permissions and music licences are recorded.
□ The trailer and first full episode have a distribution plan.
□ One metric and one listener question are set for the first month.
Use the sports content creation workflow to research each episode. For complex topics, a Dossier keeps the claims, context and sources together before you record.
